What circles are you operating from?

This week I send a simple message in the hope it may provide a point of reflection.

During these unknown times, it is easy to get overwhelmed, to live into the future, to try and predict what may happen or to take-on angst for things that we have no control over. This can cause elevated fear, panic, anxiety and depression.

As leaders in times of crisis, we need to be able to differentiate between emotion and fact to make considered decisions. When the pathway is unclear and things are changing rapidly, we need to weigh things up with the best of what we factually know holding the best interests of those we serve at heart.

One approach that may be helpful for yourself or those you lead is to consider what circle you are operating from.

1. What’s in your circle of control? What do you directly have control over? What are the facts? Peel it back, ask the questions and be honest with yourself. Are you owning ‘stuff’ that you actually have no control over. What is in your direct control? Are you doing what you can with what you can directly control?

2. What’s in your circle of influence? What don’t you have direct control of, but have a say-in or can influence via your actions? What can you minimise or restrict around you that will have a direct influence over your circle of control? Consider how much of an impact this may have and apply your energies strategically.

3. What’s in your circle of concern? What are those things that you worry about, are fearful of, or imagine in your mind? These are things you have no control or influence over. These things may or may not occur in the future; either way you can minimise impact by focusing on the inner circles, but ultimately you have no control over them.

These circles can provide a mindful reflection over what is currently on your plate during these changing times. If it’s hard to see the wood for the trees, ask someone to take a look through your circle placements to provide another perspective.

Pull it in tight, focus on what’s of utter importance and ask for help where you need to.

AND WHAT ELSE?

Like a lot of my clients, you might be wondering how to keep your learning initiatives going in these disruptive times. I’m in the thick of creative planning with many clients about how we can help their people to thrive, and we’re coming up with some super-cool solutions. I am also still coaching and mentoring, and holding professional learning sessions virtually. If you’d like to chat about what’s possible, drop me a line.

Go well, keep above the line, and much aroha to you and yours.

There are plenty of speakers to choose from. I am not the norm. You won’t be bored to tears by the same ole’ approach and dribble. How about bringing Mary-Anne for the conference or all-staff day.

Give me a stage and I’ll own it. Give me a room and I’ll energise it. Give me your people and I’ll inform and inspire them.

Need virtual delivery – no sweat! I have facilitated virtual full and half-day workshops, virtual keynote speaking at online conferences, and might I say, you still get the Mary-Anne goodness you deserve!
